Stop doing this on social media in 2025

Hey Reader,

The world is ever-changing...

If you refuse to keep up with it, you don't stay still, you actually get left behind.

There's no space that this is more true than the social media industry.

Social media changes every year!

Just because something worked in 2024 doesn't mean it will work in 2025.

For this reason, staying updated with what's currently working at any given time and continuous experimentation for yourself is key.

Don't be afraid to test.

Trying new things helps you stay ahead of the competition who are still using the same strategies from a year or even 5 years ago.

Staying updated with what's currently working is something you can easily get from consuming content from trusted creators across platforms like

  • Instagram
  • YouTube
  • TikTok

and more.

When you combine these two strategies, you stop playing the guessing game.

My goal with this newsletter is to help you with one part of that which is sharing those strategies or practices that are no longer a good idea going into 2025.

We're not going to be talking about obvious ones like:

  • Follow Unfollow,
  • Buying followers,
  • Engagement groups.

and the like...

Those have never been a good idea to begin with.

We'll mainly be discussing strategies that used to work in 2024 or a few years earlier that are best left behind in those years.

Let's get into it.

Social Media Practices That Won't Work in 2025

1.Trend hopping or hopping on every trend

In the first letter in this series, we talked about trends for 2025.

In case you missed that, check it out here.

Here's the thing about trends though...

When properly used, they can help you get more views and reach a wider audience but you don't want to overdo them.

While they can help you, they can also harm you if you hop on the wrong trends or trends that don't align with your brand.

This is especially true for short-term trends, platform, or niche-specific trends.

You don't need to make this harder for yourself than it is, just ask yourself these two questions:

  • Does this trend align with my brand?
  • Does this trend move me closer to your social media goals?

Also, trends shouldn't be your entire social media strategy. They should just be a part of it.

2. Soulless or Impersonal Content

In 2025, you can no longer afford to not be personal in your content.

This is for two main reasons...

More competition

A few years ago, you could get great results on social by sharing common tips and tricks.

But...

With the increase in the number of people creating content and posting online, this is no longer the case.

Also with the advent of AI, content like that just isn't as effective as it used to be.

Which means that standing out is more important than ever before.

But it also means that it's easier than ever before because most people are still stuck in the days of posting just tips and tricks.

People want to connect with people

While sharing tips and tricks can help you build an audience...

If you want to build a community of die-hard fans,

The kind that will be happy to engage with your content or buy your offers...

You need to allow them to connect with you as a person.

To do this, your content should go beyond tips and tricks.

You need to share your stories, personal experiences, failures, and successes.

This doesn't mean sharing your entire life, your deepest secret, or the fight you had with your spouse that morning.

It means choosing a few parts of your life that align with your message and incorporating them into your content.

Things that reflect your values like going to the gym, learning, and more.

Your goal with these types of content should be to let your audience connect with you while educating them.

3.Trying to be on too many platforms (at the wrong time!)

This is for people who are solopreneurs and don't have a team or processes in place to help them distribute content.

Focus is important.

Instead of spreading yourself too thin by taking on too many platforms at once, start with one at the start.

Choose one platform where you know your target audience spends their time and start there.

Dominate that platform then branch out from there.

This will help you get much better results with that platform faster which will then allow you to branch out faster.

If you take on too many platforms at the start...

you'll likely end with mediocre results on all the platforms instead of exceptional results on one.

I follow this rule myself which is why I've focused mainly on Instagram for the past 3 years.

After growing my audience there to over 40,000 followers, I've finally decided it's time for me to expand beyond IG.

I'll be sharing more details about that soon in another newsletter.

4.Overrelying on tactics

There's a difference between tactics and strategy.

Your strategy is the long-term roadmap/game plan or blueprint and how you plan to achieve it.

Tactics are short-term actions that can help a bit in your overarching strategy.

Most people focus too much on short-term tactics and don't have much in the way of strategy.

Things like:

  • The perfect hashtag sets,
  • Best posting time,
  • Trending audio,

can help you but they won't get you the results you want because they are just tactics.

They mean nothing if your content isn't good enough.

They mean nothing if your community isn't engaged.

They mean nothing if you're reaching the wrong audience.

The key pieces of your social media strategy are your target audience, content, community, and consistency.
