Fail your way to success on IG

What should you do when you post something and it does badly?

Like really badly.

You spend hours working on a reel and it becomes your worst post till date.

You check the script for your carousel 3 times, spend all this time in Canva making the design look attractive only to post it, and...

"F*ck this!"

"Making content is a waste of time"

"Sometimes I wonder why I bother"

"Instagram sucks!"

Sound familiar?

Let's break down how you stop yourself from spiraling when this happens.

Because it will keep happening.

Even the content from "the best content creator" won't always perform well.

What you should do when a post flops

First... here's what not to do.

Blame the algorithm!

Yes, not all your followers see your content.

Yes, reach has gone down on average.

But...

No, you're not shadowbanned.

No, the algorithm doesn't have it out for you.

As long as there are still people getting results and growing their accounts with all the algorithm changes, then you can do it as well.

You just need to learn how.

Instead of blaming the algorithm and giving it all your power, take accountability.

Don't spiral and start blaming yourself or feeling insecure though.

Your content is not YOU.

The fact that a post did badly doesn't say a single thing about you, the creator.

It doesn't mean you suck!

It doesn't mean you'll never succeed.

It just means you need to get better which is a great thing.

Now let's reframe this entire idea of "failed content"

Why you need to fail and make bad content

You may heard that failure at anything is bad and is something to be ashamed of. This couldn’t be further from the truth, failure is good and is an important part of the process.

A quote from Alex Hormozi which I love says: Failure leads to learning and learning leads to success.

You'll agree with me if I say success is good, isn't it?

And since failure leads to success then it isn't a bad thing in itself as long as you make sure you take the lessons from it and improve.

The key is to always take the lesson.

That's definitely easier said than done though so here's how failing actually helps you become a better content creator.

 1. Failure provides feedback on your content:

Your worst posts are your greatest source of learning and feedback when it comes to knowing what type of content your audience likes.

They let you know what type of content works and what type doesn’t.

This ability to know what kind of content will do well will be a great help on your journey as a content creator.

You'll be able to tell which posts will do well 6 times out of 10 before even posting them (you can't be completely sure because of the algorithm of course)

 2. Failure improves your resilience:

The more your posts fail, the more you learn to detach from the outcome of getting a specific number of likes and comments.

You start focusing on the content creation process instead of living your life trying to please an algorithm.

Like I said earlier, you cannot be 100% sure which posts will do well because of the algorithm.

But even if you could, this is a slippery slope.

You'll get used to your content doing well and it'll hit you like a truck when one post finally does badly - which is inevitable.

 3. Failure actually makes you more creative:

Did you know YouTube started as a dating platform when it was initially launched in 2005?

It failed.

A year later, it was receiving 25 million views and 20,000 uploads every day.

What changed?

The founders took their failure as feedback.

Instead of making the platform only about dating videos, they opened it up to any type of video content. It’s now the second-largest search engine in the world and I'm sure I don't have to tell you how powerful it is.

This never would have happened if the founders hadn't taken the lesson from their failure and improved on it.

So don't run from failure. Embrace it.

Be willing to suck for a while, be willing to post bad content for a while.

Then get better.

Get the feedback, improve, and try again.

If you do this, you'll get the results you want, conquer your fear of sucking and showing up online, and stop stressing over the algorithm all in one go.

That's it for today, hope you enjoyed reading.
