4 educational content types

People love new information.

They love learning about stuff they might not have known about as long as the topic is something they're genuinely interested in.

You can use your content to provide this information by creating educational content for them.

Educational content is content that is created with the goal of teaching your audience something new or interesting.

Doing this regularly is a great way to

  • Establish credibility,
  • Build your authority and trustworthiness,
  • And grow your audience on Instagram.

However, it can feel intimidating to get started creating and posting educational content...

What kind of content do you post?

How do you get content ideas for these posts?

Let's begin by breaking down some easy types of educational content you can start posting today!

4 types of educational content you need to start posting

1. Tutorials/How to's

Tutorials are step-by-step explanations of how to perform a specific action or achieve a certain result or outcome. These are a great way to share valuable information and provide valuable insights to your audience.

For tutorials, you really want to focus on making them as clear and easy to follow as possible.

You can also make your tutorials much more memorable and helpful to your audience when you show them how to do it rather than telling them. Videos, images, and illustrations are powerful in helping you to do this.

There are several ways you can create a tutorial on Instagram.

Any content format that allows for medium or long-form content will work perfectly.

You can make it a talking head reel where you actually get on camera and break down the concept to your followers,

You can use detailed carousels that walk them through each individual step that they need to be aware of.

2. Quick Tips

While tutorials provide step-by-step guidelines for performing a specific action or achieving a particular result, quick tips serve to share one or two quick nuggets of information that your audience can find helpful.

This could be a tip that will help them get to their desired result faster or even a mistake that is holding them back.

These kinds of educational content can be posted in any form because they're not usually as long as a full-blown tutorial. Text on-screen reels, single images as well as the aforementioned talking head reels and carousels can easily be used.

3. Content Pointing out Mistakes

Apart from showing your audience the right way to go about doing things with your step-by-step tutorials and tips...

Your educational content also needs to let them know when they are doing things the wrong way or holding their own progress back.

You do this by sharing common mistakes.

Mistakes cost your audience valuable time and even money sometimes so by pointing these out and showing them a better way, you can quickly make a good impression.

After pointing out their mistake though, don't just end it there.

Either provide actionable steps that they can take to stop making this mistake and start getting better results or direct them to a product or service where you help them,

4. Content Debunking Myths

Every industry has myths that have been perpetrated because of misinformation.

Taking a stand against these myths in your content and showing your audience what you think is the right way to do things instead helps you...

  • Build authority,
  • Showcase expertise,
  • Demonstrate that you have your own opinions, and don't just follow the status quo.

Also if these myths are holding your audience back from potentially getting the results they want then you can go ahead and show them the right thing to focus on - similar to when you point out their mistakes.

You'll notice that these categories can also blend together in your content. For example, you can share a common mistake that people make in your niche and then a quick tip to fix it.

How to come up with content ideas for your educational content.

Now that you know the different types of educational content that you can post, the question then becomes "How do you come up with content ideas that fit these different categories?"

The good news is that I already wrote a previous newsletter about how you can come up with high-performing content ideas for your educational content.
